Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

Episode: Pilot

Plot: The Terminators return to finish their mission: kill John Connor.

I admit I was rather impressed with the pilot episode, even with the T2-ish remake air about it. I think they did a reasonably good job of meshing events from post-T2 to our current (okay, 2007. close enough. ) era without being overly tiresome in explaining the whole Terminator back story. I also liked the how some elements and the feel of the filmy were akin to that found in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. Of course that shouldn't be surprising given some of the team that made T3 also are working on TSCC. Some parts were obvious homages to certain scenes in Terminator and Terminator 2 but were obviously used to indicate certain aspects of characters. Bear McCreary's soundtrack also added a nice feel to the episode, though some parts the music was a little over done.

While concerned that the writers and producers will not be able to maintain enough interesting and cohesive plots, story lines, and character development to keep the series running for long without becoming repetitive, illogical, or boring (ala the most recent Battlestar Galactica season) I think they may have some interesting points of interest from which to work. Among them are the apparently new Terminators, Skynet, and the FBI agent hunting down Sarah and John Connor.

While hard to judge an actor or their character in a single episode, I think overall I think an good job was done. While I'm not sure Lena Heady has the presence (physical and personality) to carry the role of Sarah Connor I'm willing to give it time because the chemistry works well with her co-stars. Much can be said the same for Thomas Dekker as John Connor though he seemed more comfortable in his role. I think Summer Glau had perhaps one of the more difficult roles as Cameron, an apparently new model of Terminator, trying to maintain the mix of machine and human components in the role. Richard T. Jones I think nailed his role as FBI Agent Ellison. Of course it's hard to judge an actor plying a machine I think Owain Yeoman did a good job as the other Terminator (apparently named Cromartie according to IMDB).

I did get some amusement that Aaron James Cash plays a Terminator. For Farscape fans you should remember him as Dregon Carzenova in the Look at the Princess trilogy episodes.
